Scrutiny of youth justice laws 'cements Queensland as a backwater', youth advocate and lawyer Katherine Hayes says

 A prominent youth advocate and lawyer has accused a state parliamentary committee of "shallow" scrutiny of youth justice legislation, saying it "cements Queensland as a backwater state with echoes of the Bjelke-Peterson era".

Katherine Hayes, CEO of the Youth Advocacy Centre, made the comments after the parliament's Economics and Governance Committee – made up of Labor and LNP MPs — today released a report recommending the Palaszczuk government's proposed youth justice law changes be passed.

"The Youth Advocacy Centre is alarmed by the lack of analysis and understanding of the proposed youth crime laws demonstrated by the Economics and Governance Committee in its report on the Strengthening Community Safety Bill 2023," she said in a statement.

Former Logan mayor Luke Smith gets suspended sentence after admitting to secret commissions and misconduct

 A former Logan mayor has avoided time in jail after being handed a suspended sentence for corruption and misconduct offences while he held public office. On Tuesday Timothy Luke Smith, 53, pleaded guilty to three offences, a day after he was due to face trial in the District Court in Brisbane. He admitted to receiving a secret commission by an agent, failing to update his register of interests, and misconduct in relation to public office. Smith was also facing one count of perjury, accused of knowingly giving false testimony at a public hearing, but this charge was discontinued. Former Moreton Bay mayor Allan Sutherland slams 'out of control' corruption watchdog after charges against him are dropped

 A former south-east Queensland mayor has slammed the state's corruption watchdog, calling the organisation "out of control", after criminal charges levelled against him more than two years ago were dropped. In December 2019, Allan Sutherland was suspended from his position at the Moreton Bay Regional Council, after being charged with two counts of misconduct in relation to public office.
